KARACHI: The Port Control Unit of Model Customs Collectorate of Preventive has seized a record quantity of 21.7 metric tons of Acetic Anhydride stuffed in a 20 feet container that had arrived from Tanzania.
Addressing a news conference here on Tuesday, Tariq Huda, Collector Customs Preventive, said the container was declared to contain “Acetic Acid Glacial”.
However, he said, the consignment was primarily suspected in view of the fact that traditionally Tanzania is not a producer of Acetic Acid.
The Collector informed that the consignee of the shipment was declared to be in Sialkot, but this aspect is being investigated.
He pointed out that this is by far the biggest quantity of Acetic Anhydride seized anywhere in the world.
Tariq Huda said Acetic Anhydride is used as the major precursor for the production of heroin and is also one of the major chemical used in manufacturing IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices).
It is, however, yet to be determined that what the actual purpose of this attempt was, he added.
He further said the value of seized Acetic Anhydride is more than Rs 860 million.
