A group of youth, shouting pro-freedom slogans, tried to march towards Nowhatta Chowk. Indian police fired teargas shells to disperse the protesters.
However, the demonstrators offered stiff resistance and fought pitched battles with the police personnel.
Many people were injured in the police action, Kashmir Media Service reported.
Some of the youth were also carrying Pakistani flag.
The clashes and subsequent shutdown by the traders disrupted normal life in Nowhatta, Gojwara and adjacent areas.
“The police fired several teargas shells inside some shops while chasing the protesters. They also ransacked our shops. We closed our shops to register our protest against thrashing of shopkeepers and damaging of their goods by police,” said a group of aggrieved shopkeepers.
