PESHAWAR: Local PPP leaders expressed dissatisfaction over the performance of their party and demanded conducting intra-party polls to bring new and actual leadership in forefront of the people. The demand was echoed in a function organised in connections with the 88th birthday anniversary of the later former prime minister and founding chairman, PPP Zulfikar Ali Bhutto here in Peshawar Press Club (PPC) on Tuesday. Former Provincial President, PPP, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Syed Zahir Ali Shah was chief guest while founding PPP activist, Saeed Ahmad Khan presided over the ceremony.
Besides, members of the Peoples’ Lawyer Forum (PLF), Peoples’ Youth Organisation (PYO) and party workers at large attended the ceremony. Prominent amongst the participants were included provincial president, PLF KP Akbar Khan advocate, Zulfikar Afghani, Ayub Shah and Haji Mohammad Iqbal.
Addressing the ceremony, former PPP provincial president, Syed Zahir Ali Shah called for holding intra-party polls to re-organise it at gross-root level. He said that until the conducting of intra-party polls and coming of actual leadership in forefront, the party could not be reinvigorated.
He said that politics could be carried in houses and drawing rooms and the leadership of the party will have to set aside their fears of security to come among the people. Syed Zahir Ali Shah, who was health minister during the ANP-PPP coalition government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, said that the organisation structure of the party has become weakened and lacking any procedure of reward and punishment. He said that the presence of the party leadership among the masses is essential.
Critical of the style of the party in dealing with the Dr Asim Hussain case, he said that the PPP has been put at risk to save one individual in Sindh. The dismal situation faced by the PPP presently, he said was never witnessed in past. Another PPP stalwart, Ayub Shah said that for strengthening the party, the leadership will have to implement the manifesto in letter and spirit. He called for the re-organisation of the party from village council to central level.
He was of the view that political dictatorship is not acceptable to party workers, adding that till bringing of neat and clean persons in forefront, the party could not be revived among the masses. Earlier, City President, Zulfikar Ahmad Afghani and provincial president, PLF, Akbar Khan advocate paid rich tributes to the services of late PPP chairman, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto for the country and downtrodden classes of the society. They also pledged to follow the mission and philosophy of late Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and rendering of sacrifices in this regard.
