WEB DESK: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday said killing in the name of honor was no honor. Violence on women was against the teachings of Islam.
“Islam especially emphasizes over women rights. Quran broadly speaks on this subject,” he said while speaking to the ceremony held to unveil Oscar award winner Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy’s documentary ‘A Girl in the River’.
The PM commended Sharmeen for her art and on her achievement of the academy award. He said she had highlighted dark sides of the society.
He said men and women had equal rights in Islam. The Holy Prophet (SAWW) said “the most respectful among us is the one who respects women and the most disrespectful among us is the one who disrespects women.”
“We should ensure every suitable measures to end honor killing. We should empower women economically and politically to end violence against them.”
Nawaz Sharif said Quaid-e-Azam Muhammed Ali Jinnah also spoke on women rights. We should put his quotes into action.
He said many packages had been launched including Benazir Bhutto Income Support Program to empower women economically at the grass-root level.
Maryam Nawaz and Sharmeen Chinoy were also present on the occasion among other dignitaries.
