The major opposition political parties on Friday rejected the government’s Terms of References (ToRs) for judicial commission, announced by the Prime Minister, to investigate the allegations in Panama Leaks against his family. They also described the Prime Minister’s address to the nation as ‘disappointing’ and ‘nothing more than a personal explanation at the public expense’.
Reacting to the Prime Minister’s address to the nation and the ToRs for the judicial commission, leader of the opposition in Senate and senior PPP leader Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan plainly rejected the ToRs saying “this is not the commission; the opposition parties are demanding to investigate Panama Leaks”. He said the government should have taken the opposition parties into confidence before finalising the ToRs of the proposed commission.
PPP’s spokesperson Senator Farhatullah Babar, commenting on Prime Minister’s address to the nation, said there was nothing new in his speech. “It was no more than a personal explanation at public expense,” he said. He further said that the Prime Minister alluded to a connection between General Musharraf’s accountability and calls for his stepping down. “This needs to be elucidated,” Senator Babar added.
Talking to media persons, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) vice chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi said the government should finalise the ToRs after consultations with opposition parties.
“We’ve to see as to how powerful the judicial commission would be,” he said, adding PTI would devise its strategy after consulting other opposition parties. Reacting to the PM’s speech, PTI’s central spokesperson Naeemul Haq described the speech as ‘disappointing’. “Imran Khan was the target of the Prime Minister…The Prime Minister seems to be the worst victim of Imran Khan phobia. He [Imran] will respond to PM’s address by Saturday,” he said.
“In fact, the steps taken by Army Chief against corrupt elements have caused serious impacts on the Prime Minister’s nerves”, he said, adding the Prime Minister also failed to declare the assets as revealed in Panama Leaks.
Earlier, PTI chief Imran Khan chaired a meeting of the party’s ‘strategy committee’ in which the government’s response to the Panama Leaks was discussed in detail. According to Naeemul Haq, the meeting also deliberated upon the ‘crucial’ speech to be given by Imran Khan on April 24 [Sunday] in the party’s rally in Fatima Jinnah Park in connection with party’s 20th foundation day. He further said the meeting also discussed the overall political situation of the country and the party’s strategy for the future.
