WEB DESK: Former Pakistan Cricketer Azhar Mahmood observes that Pakistan’s domestic cricket is ‘quantity focused rather than quality focused’
In his blog to Pak Passion.net, he said, “There is quantity but not quality. There are far too many teams and the quality of cricketers coming through into the national team is not up to the standard that it should be.”
He was the bowling coach for Pakistan in Asia Cup 2016 and WorldT20. He suggested that PCB needs to follow Imran Tahir’s example in setting the fitness measures for the team.
“The PCB needs to adopt a policy where players have to be up to a certain level of fitness in order to play for Pakistan. Let me give you the example of Imran Tahir. He was told by CSA that there will be no compromise on his fitness if he wanted to play for South Africa. “
Lahore-born South African player, Tahir, made his T20 debut in 2013 against Sir Lanka.
He got his first call to the South African Test team in 2010 when England where touring. It was due to an embarrassing error by the selection committee, Tahir was not eligible to play for South Africa until January, 2011. He was quickly withdrawn from the team then, but found his way back almost immediately after becoming eligible to play.
“Mohammad Amir was Pakistan’s best bowler five years ago, he’s still Pakistan’s best bowler because he’s dedicated and hard-working.
“He’s played no cricket for five years but is still our best bowler. His wrist position is so good and he wants to prove a point. This commitment is missing from some of the other bowlers,” he expressed his opinion.
He talked about his suggestion to PCB for betterment in team’s progress “the PCB needs to hire a sports psychologist to get the players mindset right and get their thinking to be a lot more positive. There’s too much negativity in the Pakistan dressing room and that needs to be eradicated. “
After the announcement of Sarfraz Ahmed as T20 captain, Mahmood thinks that “The captain and coach in all formats have to be in the selection committee. You simply cannot have a situation where players are picked for a squad and the coach or captain has no say in it at all.”
He said there is too much negativity in the Pakistan dressing room and that needs to be eradicated. “There needs to be more self-belief amongst our cricketers and that is missing at the moment. The players need to believe more in them and that they can win from any situation, which is lacking these days,” he said.
