ISLAMABAD: Pakistani police say they now have all five suspects in custody in the killing of a 19-year-old schoolteacher who was tortured and burned her to death earlier this week for refusing to marry a man twice her age.
Police official Waheed Ahmed says three more suspects were arrested early Friday. This followed the arrests on Thursday of two suspects in the case.
Ahmed says the prime suspect in the case is the man whose son the teacher, Maria Bibi, refused to marry.
Bibi’s father Sadaqat Hussain Abbas has praised the police for the arrests and asked the government in an emotional plea to execute the men in his family’s presence in the same way they killed Bibi. Demands like this are common but Pakistani law doesn’t allow for such punishment. -AP
