HYDERABAD: An underage girl filed a petition in the Sindh High Court (SHC) Monday and appealed for providing her and her family police protection from the organizers of a jirga who gave her in marriage as a punishment.
Advocate Nazeer Laghari, counsel of the petitioner Saima Rind, informed the court that a local jirga in Tando Allahyar punished Rind’s family by giving their daughter into marriage.
The jirga found her brother Ghulam Shabir Rind guilty of talking to a woman from the to-be bride groom Barkat Ali over phone and as a punishment ordered the family to give Saima in marriage to the other family, he added.
The petitioner’s counsel apprised the court that Saima was 14 years old and as such she cannot be married and that too without her own free will.
The petitioner appealed to the court to give her protection and order the police to take action against the influential people who organized the jirga.
The Hyderabad Circuit Bench ordered Tando Allahyar police to provide protection to the girl and her family and to produce the persons who held the jirga in the court on the next date of hearing scheduled for Sep 19. -APP
