KARACHI: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) sets all to stage “Salaam Shohda” rally on Sunday to pay homage to the martyrs of the Karsaz tragedy who were massacred due to twin blasts in Benazir Bhutto’s homecoming rally on October 18, 2007.
“The actual date of the anniversary is October 18, which is a working day hence the party chairman chose Sunday October 16 to commemorate the anniversary for comfort of the people and particularly of business community,” said Senator Saeed Ghani, an advisor on labour to Sindh Chief Minister speaking at a press briefing at PPP’s media cell on Friday.
He said that main rally will begin from Bilawal House on Sunday and pass through ICI Bridge, Kakri Ground Lyari, Napier Road and finally to culminate at Karsaz Shaarey Faisal where twin blasts hit the Benazir Bhutto’s homecoming rally. He said PPP chairman wants trade and economic activities should not be disturbed and Sunday witnesses weekly closures of commercial markets.
Ghani said that in order to prevent any congestion, impediment or gridlock to the way of Salaam Shohda Rally, it has been decided that only two of six districts would accompany the rally from the very start at Bilawal House while the floats from four remaining districts would join the rally from different points.
It may be recalled that 157 supporters of the PPP were massacred in the twin blasts said to be suicide bombings while PPP Chairwoman Benazir Bhutto was leading her homecoming rally. Senator Ghani said that PPP in general and PPP top leadership in particular had always been targeted by the extremist outfits therefore various protective steps for the security of the PPP leadership were taken and a group of loyal workers was assigned keep the PPP Chairman and other leaders within security circle as first line of defense to be annexed by police from outer side.
Answering a question, he said, no security or law enforcing agency has informed about any threat to PPP chairman and other leaders so far but as it is on record that the PPP leaders were always named in the hit list of terrorists, the party has adopted key measures for self-security along with support from Sindh Police.
He said that PPP Chairman would speak to the participants four times on different locations during the rally and would deliver his final speech at the monument of martyrs of Karsaz Tragedy who the PPP portrayed as martyrs of democracy. Rashid Hussain Rabbani, Waqar Mehdi, Najmi Alam, Lateef Mughal and other party leaders were also present on the occasion.
