ISLAMABAD: A five member larger bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali has sought opinion from the parties over constitution of a commission for investigation into Panama Papers.
In his remarks, the Chief Justice said documents submitted by the parties in the case need to be verified. A petition is already before the apex court praying for the constitution of a commission on the matter.
The Chief Justice clarified that the commission will have all the powers of a Supreme Court judge and it can acquire information from any department. He said the parties will have the opportunity to establish their respective points before the commission. He said the commission will present its report back to the larger bench.
Anwar Zaheer Jamali said the court is fully independent and the decision will be on merit.
Earlier submitting his arguments, Salman Butt, the counsel of the prime minister said there is no contradiction in the speeches of his client. He said Panama papers do not have the name of his client.
The hearing of the case has been adjourned till December 09.
In its earlier hearing on Tuesday, Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali said the FBR and FIA have not done their job, if these institutions do not want to work, why not close them.
Imran Khan’s lawyer Naeem Bukhari drew the court’s attention towards Maryam Nawaz as dependent of Nawaz Sharif. “I have evidence to prove that Maryam Nawaz is dependent on the Prime Minister,” Bukhari said.
