HYDERABAD: The Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) inaugurated first free WiFi villages in Tharparkar on Saturday.
According to a press release issued here the company’s spokesman, Mohsin Babar that the SECMC’s Chief Executive Officer Shamsuddin Shaikh and Reham Khan, a journalist and filmmaker, performed the inaugural of the free Wifi to the villages.
Speaking on the occasion, the CEO informed that 2 villages incuding Tharyo Halepoto and Senhri Dars, which were located near the SECMC’s project site in Thar Coal Block II had been provided the free Wifi service.
In the second phase, all the schools in the Block II would be provided free WiFi, he added.
“We want to take children of our host communities into the 21st century at par with children of urban centers of the country,” Shaikh said.
The CEO apprised that the company aimed to provide free Wifi to entire Thar Block II in the upcoming phase, adding that ground work was being prepared in that regard.
“We are implementing a comprehensive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) plan for provision of quality education, state of the art health facilities and clean drinking water facilities to the host communities with around population of 10,000 inhabitants,” he said.
“Provision of scholarship to deserving students and Thari Trainee Engineers program are also underway for Thar Coal Block II residents,” Shaikh added.
Reham Khan said the internet had become necessity of life and providing the same free of cost to the socioeconomically downtrodden people of Tharparkar was a noble cause.
“Internet facility will empower them with information and education. Resultantly, they shall be standing at par with fellow countrymen of urban centers,” she said.
The SECMC is undertaking a $2 billion project in Thar Coal Block II involving the coal mining and production of 660 megawatt electricity from coal by 2019. —APP
