A New York-based Hindu celebrity Chef, Vikas Khanna expressed his gratitude towards a Muslim family who looked after him and saved him during Mumbai riots in 1992.
He honors them in a way that he has been fasting for a day during the holy month of Ramadan since 1992.
He used social media and wrote on Monday that he was happy to have tracked down the family and would break his Ramadan fast with them. Last night, he shared a iftar meal with the Mumbai family and wrote, ‘Heartwarming evening. All Heart. Tears. Pain. Pride. Courage. Humanity. Gratitude.’
He added that, during his training in 1992, the riot broke and the whole city was under fire. The staff was stuck in the hotel due to curfew. He then heard rumors about getting intense near Ghatkopar area, where his brother used to live.
He got worried and rushed there. On his way, a Muslim family warned him against rioters and took him in. Soon, a mob descended upon their home and demanded to know who he was. The family said that he was their son, and the group left the place without harming anyone. The family also sent a relative to find out about chef’s brother.
