Reduced sense of taste
Studies say that deficiency in folic acid may result in having trouble tasting your food because your taste receptor can’t send message to your brain via your nervous system due to the existing tongue problem.
Mouth sore and tongue swelling
This occurs when the lack of folate is quiet severe. Your tongue may look swollen, red or shiny. Due to decrease in red blood cells and you may feel pain when swallowing or suffer from a sore tongue and stomatitis.
Such symptoms like nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhea are the signs of body lacking folic acid. It also leads to significant weight loss.
When your body lacks folate, you don’t have enough red blood cells (and hemoglobin) to provide your internal organs with the necessary amount of oxygen.
In severe cases of anemia caused by folate deficiency, your brain gets less oxygen than it ideally should. You can also feel pain in other parts of your iron-deficient body, especially in the chest and legs.
You may struggle with depression, have trouble concentrating, and feel forgetful and irritable. Insufficient intake of folate may also increase the risk of developing serious disorders such as dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
