Here are 7 reason of watching Indian version of film ‘Manto’.
In 2015, Nandita Das wanted to cast Irfan
In 2015 Nandita Das wanted to cast Irfan Khan. She said, “Irfan fits the role to the T as he speaks fluent Urdu, looks a lot like Manto and, above all, is a wonderful actor.”
But in 2016, Nandita announced casting Nawazuddin. She said, “I have had Nawazudding in mind from the very outset, but in India economics always interferes with art and there was pressure on me to cast a more mainstream star.”
Role of Rishi Kapoor
Rishi Kapoor expressed his desire to act with Nawazuddin in future as well. He wrote on Twitter, “Thank you Nawaz! Did that bit for Nandita Das and Manto title role played by you. We will have fun working together in the future. Regards!”
How Nawazuddin felt after shooting
After shooting Nawazuddin felt some real changes in himself. He confessed that after playing the role, he became brutally honest.
After finishing shoot, Nawazuddin called Nandita in the same emotional state and said, “Yeh character jaldi se mere dimaag se nikalna chahiye, nahi toh gadbad ho jayegi. Because at that time, I became too honest and truthful. Uss waqt itna zyada sach bolne laga tha ki maine apni band bajwa li.”
Nawazuddin charged only Rs 1 for the film
Nawazuddin has a kind gesture towards this project and it seems that money is not everything for him. Nandita said, “This is the character that an actor would give an arm and leg for. But to not charge even a nominal fee is very gracious of Nawaz.”
Location was a hurdle
Nandita said, “One of the toughest challenges was to find the right locations for Bombay and Lahore of the 1940s amidst modern-day clutter on a budget that didn’t allow the luxury of too many sets and visual effects. And sadly, we couldn’t shoot in Lahore, as initially planned, because of the political tensions. So, we had to find Lahore in India. Thankfully we did and that’s a whole different story.”
Manto’s daughter attended screening in Mumbai
Saadat Hasan manto’s daughter Nusrat and Nuzhat attended a special screening of the film in Mumbai along with their spouses.
Talking about Nawaz, film’s director Nandita said, “I am waiting for the people to love and appreciate the film and especially Nawaz. The way we have received validation and acceptance for Nawaz internationally, I am sure that people in India will be able to connect in the same way too. Even though awards are subjective in nature and a lot of times, popular films win all the popular awards, I am waiting for people to see Manto. If Nawaz doesn’t win all the awards, then I will surely be surprised.”
