Web Desk: During a relatives’ get together, we sometime pressurize our children into hugging them, kissing them, coercing them to reciprocate love by these physical gesture.
By doing so we confuse our kids about rules of body safety. On one hand we tell them that they have full right over their body and no one can force them to do anything, on the other hand we force them into doing intimate things with their body, without their wish.
It is essential for our kids to know that no one can touch them without their wish and they cannot touch without requesting for it verbally.
This practice can prevent sexual abuse and assault. One should know they can practice full control over what happens to their bodies.
Tell them they don’t owe anybody a hug or a kiss, communicating the same to your family will also familiarise them with the rules.
How to stop your relatives to hug them forcefully? To avoid making the situation embarrassing, step in and say ‘It’s okay if you want to do it some other time’ or ‘It’s fine if you feel that way, let’s do a high-five instead.’
Your kids’ interaction with your relatives doesn’t have to be physical all the time, he can also please then by reciting a poem, showing drawing or sharing videos he loves watching.
