Ministry for National Health Services on Saturday issued a statement clarifying that Prime Minister Imran Khan was not fully vaccinated when he contracted the virus.

The statement came as rumours started circulating on social media regarding the effectiveness of the vaccine as the prime minister testes positive for COVID-19 two days after receiving the first jab of the vaccine.

In the statement, the Ministry for National Health maintained that for the vaccine to be fully effective one needs to receive both doses.

"Prime Minister Imran Khan was not fully vaccinated when he contracted the virus. He only got the 1st dose and merely 2 days ago which is too soon for ANY vaccine to become effective. Anti-bodies develop 2-3 weeks after the 2nd dose of 2-dose COVID vaccines. #VaccinesWork"

The Federal Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar also took to Twitter to address concerns raised about the efficiency of the vaccine after the premier tested positive. In his tweet, Asad said:

"May Allah protect him and give him shifa. Some people questioning the efficacy of vaccination since he was vaccinated Thursday evening. The symptoms take a few days before manifesting. Hence, it is certain that PM had been infected PRIOR to vaccination. So please do vaccinate."
