This month a notable dip is seen in coronavirus cases and deaths in Pakistan. In the past 24 hours, the country reported the lowest number of one-day coronavirus deaths since April 29.

The viral disease that has ravaged the whole world for almost seven months now is finally being contained effectively in our country. Pakistan reported its first coronavirus case on the 25th of February when a traveler coming from Iran was diagnosed in the quarantine facility. The number of cases grew gradually for the first two months but then a serious spike was observed as lockdown restrictions started to ease.

In response to a sudden increase in infections, the government implemented 'Smart Lockdown' in the country and identified and sealed several cities' covid hotspots. The policy worked like magic in reducing the daily new cases in the country. So much so that for the past 10 days, Pakistan has reported less than 2,000 new cases daily. At the coronavirus peak in the country in mid-June, over 4,000-5,000 cases were being reported every day reaching the highest number of 6,825 on 14th June. Corona fatalities also increased gradually reaching the peak figure of 153 on 20th June. Now a considerable decline is seen in the number of viral deaths too.

As of today:

Pakistan has 274,289 confirmed COVID-19 cases with 1,176 people testing positive for the virus in the last 24 hours.
5,842 Covid-related deaths have occurred, with 20 people succumbing to the viral disease in the past 24 hours.
241,026 people have fully recovered from the disease, meaning over 87% of the people who contracted the novel coronavirus infection in Pakistan have recovered.

SAPM Dr. Zafar Mirza also tweeted this morning sharing the information that the number of COVID-19 deaths reported in Pakistan in the last 24 hours was lowest in over 3 months, he said:

"Today, Alhamdolilah, we have the lowest number of deaths in Pakistan due to COVID-19 in last 3 months. We had a peak of 153 deaths on 20 June and in last 24 hours we had 20. This is 87% reduction in COVID-19 related deaths. Yet no place for any complacency! "
