Yesterday, India reported a record 90,802 new coronavirus cases. It's the highest ever single-day surge of the viral infection among all major countries.

For the past six weeks or so, India has been consistently reporting a huge number of new cases daily, eclipsing even the United States and Brazil.

The first coronavirus case of India was confirmed on January 30th. Since then the virus has shaken the country. As of today, the country has reported 4,204,613 confirmed COVID-19 cases. Of these, at least 71,642 people have died with 1,016 people dying in the past 24 hours. (Statistics provided by Johns Hopkins University)

The second-most populous nation in the world is currently placed second in the list of most novel coronavirus cases, behind only the US. But experts believe that soon India will take over the United States as the viral growth is still accelerating seven months after the reporting of its first coronavirus case.

Epidemiologists believe that India is still several weeks away from flattening its Covid curve, as the viral disease has only just begun to spread across the rural areas. It's widely believed by health experts that the actual number of cases in India is several times that of the reported figures.

PM Modi is facing severe criticism due to his government's ineffective policies regarding COVID-19 spread.

With poor health infrastructure and extreme poverty in the country, India is facing two wars at the same time. The government of India led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has failed miserably in containing the COVID-19 spread in the country. Ineffective lockdown, no mentionable stimulus package, and no concrete planning regarding the post-lockdown phase by the Modi administration have been the main reasons behind the current dismal situation of the country.
