Broadsheet Saga: Cabinet approves of inquiry commission

The federal cabinet on Tuesday approved the formation of an inquiry commission to investigate the Broadsheet scandal.

The federal cabinet on Tuesday has approved the formation of an inquiry commission to investigate the Broadsheet scandal.

According to the details, the decision has been taken during the cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan in Islamabad. The federal cabinet held a detailed discussion on the Broadsheet scandal and approved the formation of a probing commission instead of a committee.

During the meeting, it was decided that former Supreme Court judge, Justice (retd) Sheikh Azmat Saeed will head the commission that will carry out a comprehensive investigation into the Broadsheet scandal.

It is important to mention that opposition parties, especially PML-N and PPP, had raised strong objections against the appointment of former SC justice as the chairman of investigating team citing a conflict of interest.

Senior PML-N leader and former Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal, while speaking to a GEO, said that the way the PTI government is handling the Broadsheet saga 'is nothing less of a joke'. Ahsan said that former SC justice has 'a personal interest in proving allegations by the Broadsheet right since he headed the bench that disqualified Nawaz Sharif without indicting him.'

The former federal minister also said that when the asset recovery agreement was signed between Broadsheet and National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Azmat Saeed was part of the anti-corruption watchdog. Iqbal also pointed out that former justice was invited to join the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital's Board of Governors after his retirement by Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Nayyar Hussain Bukhari, a senior leader of the PPP, reacting to the appointment of Azmat Saeed said the decision shows that the government is dishonest and wants to distort the facts.

The federal cabinet, earlier this month, had decided to hold a thorough investigation into the Broadsheet scandal in order to expose the elements involved in looting the national wealth, citing sources.
