Kashmir Committee on Tuesday held a meeting to review illegal social media gags against Pakistani and Kashmiri activists by Twitter over raising the Kashmir issue on the social media platform.

The meeting was chaired by Chairman Parliamentary Committee on Kashmir Affairs Shehryar Afridi and held at the Parliament House. The meeting was also virtually attended by Twitter's regional head George Salama in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Shehryar Afridi questioned if Twitter doesn't uphold and conform to the United Nation's (UN) charter on Human Rights including freedom of speech and expression to which Salma responded that Twitter has a specific policy and it discourages hate speech and upholds freedom of expression.

Afridi said that when he was the minister for interior two years back, Indian social media activists impersonating Pakistanis were generating 80 tweets per minute from Indian cities to incite violence in Pakistan over the blasphemy issue. Afridi said Twitter, unfortunately, has double standards as no action was taken against Indian agents posting tweets while they were trying to incite violence in Pakistan.

The chairman of the Kashmir committee also said that over eight million people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJ&K) are being silenced under the influence of Indian employees of Twitter.

Salma assured the Committee that Kashmiri activists are free to raise their voices with legitimate accounts and offered the full support of Twitter in the provision of equal treatment to social media activists of all parties of Kashmir conflict.

"George assured full support of Twitter in the provision of equal treatment to social media activists of all parties of Kashmir conflict. Committee urged @Twitte administration to remove illegal gags over Kashmiri activists per UN Charter, International laws on freedom of speech."
