PDM split: ANP asked to be a part of new alliance, says Aimal Wali

Awami National Party's Provincial President Aimal Wali Khan on Wednesday has said that his party has been approached to form a new opposition alliance after its split from the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), local media reported.

He made these comments while talking to the media after a party meeting. Wali said, "the party has not taken a final decision yet." However, he did not make it clear who approached the ANP.

It is important to note that PPP and ANP had announced on June 7 to take nationalist political parties and associations on board in order to devise an effective future plan against the government.

Talking about the PDM, the ANP leader said that they parted ways with the alliance due 'dominating attitude of certain elements within the group'.

Responding to a question about the upcoming local elections, Aimal Wali said the executive council of the party has decided to mobilize the party organizations and workers at the divisional level across the province. “The ANP will take part in the upcoming local government polls in the province,” he added.

ANP and PPP had decided to leave PDM after they were served a show-cause notice post-Senate elections in March. The difference in the alliance started to emerge over the proposed plan of action when PPP refused to participate in en-masse resignations from assemblies. They became prominent when Syed Yusuf Raza Gillani was elected as the opposition leader in the Senate as opposed to the wishes of JUI-F and PML-N — two key players in PDM.

PPP and ANP were asked to rejoin the alliance by the PDM Chief Maulana Fazal ur Rehman earlier in June, however, PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari made it clear that his party will not be a part of the movement anymore. Speaking at a media briefing in Mardan on Saturday, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said neither does the party wish to rejoin the alliance nor has it turned in a request for the same.
