JAKARTA: The fourth most populous country in the world is ravaged by novel coronavirus infection for the past several weeks. The fourth wave of the coronavirus has overwhelmed the country as it has become one of the global epicenters of COVID-19.

  • In the past 24 hours, over 13,668 new COVID-19 cases were detected in Indonesia while at least 335 people succumbed to the disease.

  • Indonesia reported more than 12,000 new coronavirus cases for the sixth day in a row.

As per the latest statistics provided by the website, 'Worldometers', Indonesia's current COVID-19 situation looks like this:

Total Cases: 2,018,113
New Cases (Last 24 hours): +13,668

Total Deaths: 55,291
New Deaths (Last 24 hours): +335

Total Recovered: 1,810,136

Active Cases: 152,686

Total tests conducted: 18,885,669

The vaccination campaign has also been amped up by the government but owing to the huge population of the country, it will take several months to immunize a majority of the population. Till then only strict compliance to SOPs is the nation's best bet to minimize the damage. As per the latest reports, so far, only 8.7% of the population has been partially vaccinated while 4.6% of the population has been fully immunized.

The healthcare system of Indonesia has crumbled due to an overload of patients infected with the lethal flu bug. Health professionals working on the frontlines in the country believe that the actual figures are way worse than the reported ones and there are no chances of this COVID situation getting better anytime soon. Doctors and local authorities have urged the public to strictly follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and go out in public only when necessary.
