Govt approves Rs1.68 per unit increase in electricity charges
The federal government on Friday approved a hike of Rs1.68 per unit electricity charges, according to an Aaj News report.
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) took the decision to increase the power tariff followed by a summary which was sent to the federal cabinet by the Ministry of Energy.
The decision of hike in power tariff has been taken through a circulation summary sent to all members of federal cabinet as a meeting of the cabinet is scheduled to be held on Tuesday.
The summary proposed Rs24.33 per unit maximum electricity price for domestic consumers, according to a Geo report.
The latest decision will reduce electricity subsidy by Rs72 billion during the remaining period of the financial year 2021-22, stated the report.
In a talk held in Washington DC on Wednesday, Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin said the government didn't intend to raise power tariffs.
Earlier, Nepra had increased power tariff by Rs1.95 per unit on account of the fuel cost adjustment charges for August. The adjustment charges will be applied to all consumer categories of distribution companies, except for lifeline and K-Electric consumers. It will be charged to the electricity users with the bill of October.
