The new Transparency International report revealed that corruption in Pakistan has greatly increased over the past year. It ranked the country 140 out of 180 countries on the corruption perception index and Pakistanis are not happy.

PTI had come into power on an anti-corruption manifesto. Imran Khan had promised his government would ensure Pakistan would be purged of corruption. However, the results of the corruption index show the opposite.

Social media users remember the premier’s promise. They lambasted the government for poor performance over the years.

Some users dug up old videos of PM Imran describing Transparency International as a “credible anti-corruption watchdog.”

“When transparency international used to be 'good transparency,” journalist Naila Inayat.

Other users mocked the Prime Minister and mimicked what they thought his response would be to the report.

“This Transparency International Corruption Perception index to me is a useless tool. But since the incumbents have used it to beat the others when they were in government, it is their own turn to take a beating now,” said journalist Abbas Nasir in a tweet.

Transparency International is a global movement working in over 100 countries. The goal of the watchdog organisation is to end the injustice of corruption.
