ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader and Federal Minister for Water Resources Syed Khurshid Shah called for early elections as according to him the financial meltdown could lead to unrest in the country.

Expressing his views on Aaj News program Faisla Aap Ka, Shah said that what was happening in Pakistan was not good. “We should make necessary amendments in the election laws and go to the polls,” the minister added.

Earlier in the day the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) Convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui in his meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that his party was ready for immediate elections, adding that the issue of electoral reforms can be completed within a week.

Lashing out at PTI Chairman Imran Khan, the minister said those who “call us imported are themselves imported,” adding that Imran Khan was creating chaos in the country.

He said that now Imran Khan was selling the narrative of “an imported government” but he had no program for his political future and that he could not become a hero by holding rallies, where many people were mere spectators.

He said that some people think Khan has been holding large public meetings which reflect his political power. “In our country, a large number of people even gather to see the dancing monkeys,” he added.

The minister said that if Imran Khan had not been ousted, the country could have suffered major damages.

He said the ruling coalition will not try to fool the people and overseas Pakistanis like Imran Khan which tried to introduce electronic voting machines (EVMs), adding that the production of 800,000 EVMs would take three years.

Speaking about the appointment of the army chief, he said that the new army chief should be the senior most.

On the current water situation in the country, the PPP leader said 74,000 cusecs water was released from Chashma barrage in Sindh, but only half of that water reached the latter.

He said that an inquiry had been ordered to find out where more than 20,000 cusecs water went on the way to Sindh. He said that the inquiry will be headed by MNA Khalid Magsi. He expressed hope that the probe will bring forward the facts about the water theft.
