A joint investigation team of Punjab police would be formed and summon PML-N leaders Rana Sanaullah, Attaullah Tarar, Hamza Shehbaz, and Ahmed Malik in the May 25 incident, PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry said on Sunday in a tit for tat after the Federal Investigation Agency launched a probe against two of their leaders.

“As we are expected to appear before the FIA, so as we expect them [Rana Sanaullah, Hamza Shehbaz Ata Tarar, and Ahmed Malik] to appear before Punjab police,” he said while addressing a press conference in Islamabad that was centred on the ECP ruling in the PTI prohibited funding case.

“I hope they will not hide in Islamabad. This will be a fair trial,” he said, “the Model town incident will also be probed.”

The development comes a day after the FIA constituted a panel to supervise teams in its respective zones investigation into the matter pertaining to the Election Commission of Pakistan order in Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s prohibited funding case.

Around 11 members of PTI, including Asad Qaiser, Mian Mehmoodur Rashid, and Imran Ismail, are summoned before the FIA this week pertaining to investigations into holding bank accounts. The FIA also started an investigation against PTI chief Imran Khan’s principal secretary and three employees.

Sources said that records would be sought from the State Bank of Pakistan and the Security Exchange Commission of Pakistan.

“Around Rs2 to Rs2.5 million was given to Asad Qaiser and Qasim Suri to run party operations in Khyber Pakthunkhwa and Balochistan from the main account,” he said.

“Rana Sb is only the SHO of Kohsar,” Fawad mocked the interior minister.

He wondered under what capacity the FIA was issuing notices to PTI leaders, arguing that all such people were not holding public offices in 2011 and 12. “How this is the FIA’s jurisdiction?” he said, “we have moved the court and if it orders us to cooperate then we will.”

The PTI believed that the federal government had blocked their workers from reaching Islamabad on May 25 for their ‘Azadi March’ against the Centre. The security forces were deputed to all important installations or buildings in Islamabad and Lahore. Video footage showed that police stopped PTI leader Yasmin Rashid and other women leaders from travelling.

Fawad maintained that the investigation was planned after several applications on the May 25 incident, adding that the PTI did not follow the coalition government in filing blasphemy charges. “Over a dozen FIRs were being registered on May 25 incidents.”

Hamza, Tarar, and Malik were part of the Punjab government during the May 25 incident. “If needed, the police officials serving at that time would also be summoned after removing them from their posts.”

PTI claims about other mainstream political parties

The PTI, who accused the ECP of biasedness and supporting the PDM, demanded of the commission to conduct the source of funding of other parties.

“Decision on the PPP and PML-N funding should be announced by the ECP within 15 days,” he said. Fawad made the following claims about other mainstream political parties:

  • JUI-F took funding from Saiful Islam
  • PPP showed Rs232 million worth of election expenses
  • PML-N account is not audited
  • The PML-N spent more than Rs1.30 billion on advertisements
