Move over TV channels, YouTube is king. This is the finding of a Pew research report on social media.

YouTube has been innovating with TikTok-like features, such as Shorts, which are vertical videos of up to 60 seconds. It rolled it out in India two years ago. The Verge reported that in April, Shorts had up to 30 billion views a day, according to Google.

After YouTube, TikTok was the most popular platform and while it may have focused on American teenagers, the slew of Pakistani hirings for TikTok in Dubai indicates that this market is very much on the radar. For example, there are 36 jobs in Dubai that TikTok has on its careers page. One key opening is of ‘Government Relations and Public Policy Manager - GCC’ which targets Pakistan. TikTok would be interested in ensuring good relations with the Pakistani government given that cultural backlash often leads to calls to ban the platform.

In July alone, TikTok removed 12.5 million Pakistani videos for violating community guidelines.

TikTok is the second most used social media platform for American teenagers (13 to 17 years old). Facebook is nearly dead to them, with only 32% saying they use it.

Other key takeaways from the survey

  • 95% of teens use YouTube, making it the top platform
  • 67% of teens use TikTok and then Instagram and Snapchat

Twitter, Twitch, WhatsApp, Reddit and Tumblr are low on the ladder.
