New Zealand shuffle the pack for Pakistan clash

New Zealand have named Luke Woodcock, the only uncapped player in their 15-man squad for the World Cup, in their 12-man team for the Third ODI against Pakistan.

All-rounder Woodcock, 28, made his international debut in the recent Twenty20 series with Pakistan but is yet to play an ODI.

He was a surprise name in the New Zealand squad for the World Cup following some encouraging form for Wellington in New Zealand’s domestic one-day tournament, where he averages 26.00 with the bat and 20.00 with his left-arm spin.

Batsman Jesse Ryder and all-rounder James Franklin, whose places in the team are in no doubt, have been released and will be eligible to play for Wellington’s one-day match against Northern Districts on January 30.

Ross Taylor, recently signed by Rajastan Royals for $1million (Dh3.6m) for the forthcoming IPL, will captain the side as Daniel Vettori, who is stepping down from the role after the World Cup, will travel with the side but will not play.

Mark Greatbatch said: “We think it’s important for everyone in the World Cup squad to get a run before they head to India. Luke Woodcock comes into the squad and deserves his place after playing so well for Wellington over a number of seasons.

“It’s important he gets some exposure to international cricket and I’m sure he will make the most of the opportunity when he gets his chance.”
