Sindh seeks UN help for relief operations in rain-hit areas of Sindh

Chief Secretary Sindh Raja Muhammad Abbas on Saturday said the government was carrying out relief works in rain-hit parts of Sindh in collaboration with United Nations and its partners to ramp up its efficiency and performance.

He stated this in a joint press conference with UN OCHA/UNIC Director John Ging at a Sindh Secretariat on Saturday. Chief Secretary said initially it was not expected that rains might cause huge destructions but later it turned out to be more devastating.

He linked the torrential rains in Sindh with the climate change, saying changes in weather patterns caused by global warming was occurring across the world. He added that 1170 mm rain was reported in Mithi and more then 500 mm downpour reported in other districts of the province causing 172 death tolls so far.

John Ging on the occasion expressed his satisfaction with the relief work carried out by the Sindh government. He stressed the provision of four basic necessaries including food, shelter, medical and sanitation facility and drinking water, saying those facilities should be provided to rain-affected people at earliest.

He assured the Sindh government of all assistance till the rehabilitation work gets completed. He informed that his organization had formed a comprehensive strategy to cope with the emergency situation.
