Steoporosis day reminds to take care of bones

Chairman of the Bone Care Trauma Centre and famous Orthopedic Surgeon Dr.Parvez Rais Khan has said that every year in the world Osteoporosis causes 1.5 million fractures of hip, wrist, vertebrae, and other bones in the world and it accounts for 70 percent of all the fractures occurring every year in people over the age of 45 and twenty percent of the women suffer hip fracture.

Talking to this scribe here on Wednesday Dr.Parvez Khan, in connection with the World Osteoporosis Day, said that women, generally are at greater risk of developing Osteoporosis than men and this is because.

He pointed out that the prevalence of osteoporosis was higher in women compared to men, adding that women above 40 are more prone to hip, wrist, spine and other fractures.

He said that women did not care for their diet during pregnancy and breast-feeding periods, adding that deficiencies eventually cause their bones to weaken.

Dr.Khan said that Osteoporosis is a disorder characterized by the thinning and increasing brittleness of bones, a condition that can lead to bone fracture and more than half of all women over age 65 suffer from this condition.

About the Osteoporosis Dr.Parvez khan that it means "porous bones," is a condition of excessive skeletal fragility resulting in weakened bones that break easily. He said that a combination of genetic, dietary, hormonal, age-related, and lifestyle factors all contribute to this condition.

Osteoporosis usually progresses painlessly until a fracture occurs, which is usually in the hip, spine, or wrist, he said.   Dr.Khan said that women are four times more likely than men to develop osteoporosis because of the loss of estrogen at menopause. He said that over half of all women over the age of 65 have osteoporosis even though osteoporosis is often thought of as a disease that only affects older people it can strike at any age. About the risk factors for osteoporosis Dr.Khan informed that factors that can increase osteoporosis patients chances of developing osteoporosis include, being female a small, thin body frame, a family history of osteoporosis postmenopausal status or advanced age, abnormal absence of menstrual periods, low testosterone levels in men diet low in dairy products and other sources of calcium and vitamin D.
