Judiciary discharging constitutional obligation: Asma Jehangir

President Supreme Court Bar Association Asma Jehangir said that judiciary was discharging its constitutional obligation by keeping a check on the performance of the government.

Addressing the annual meeting of SCBA Executive Committee at Supreme Court Lahore Registry, she said that judiciary was a part of democratic process, adding that there was no concept of justice without democracy and now government functionaries could not influence the judiciary. “I have never succumbed any pressure from the government,” she added.

She appreciated lawyers for launching movement for independence of judiciary, adding that judiciary would have not been restored if they had not come on roads.“I have been struggling for human rights since my childhood,” she said.
Reffering to appointment of judges in superior courts, she alleged that merit was not being observed, adding that women should also be elevated to bench.
She said that lawyers and bar councils would not allow deviation from implementation of apex court’s decisions.
Asma claimed that she received life threats during her tenure, but those who gave threats should keep in mind that no one could frighten a lawyer.
