KARACHI: A dreadful incident rattled the media industry on Monday when Aaj TV office was targeted by unknown armed men who opened fire and fled the crime scene. The terrible incident resulted in two employees of the office being injured.

The incident marked another attack on media with several questions raised, Is this the cost of displaying true journalism that we as journalists have to pay with our lives? The only response that our politicians end up giving is the common so called “jargon” they use in such scenarios, “hum is waqiye ki puri tarah se mazamat kartay hain”. But why do they have to condemn such events, why can’t the government be pro-active and stop such dreadful events from happening. The so called “condemnation” that these politicians usually come up with are only verbal. I am sick and tired of such “slang terminology” that these politicians have used over the years. Looking at the history and the trend, one thing is for sure, that these politicians would certainly not do anything about this, what I recommend is that they change their “Mayan civilization dialogues” at least.

Some politicians use such incidents to play the famous blame game while others use it to make false promises just to improve their image. The government’s false promises can easily be portrayed by the newly elected Prime Minister’s promise to restore peace within Karachi.

The incident clearly attests UNESCO’s claim of ranking Pakistan as the second most dangerous country for journalists.

Another issue that hurts the most is the ineligibility of other media networks to come forward and unite in such matters; rather they end up reporting, “A private TV (not using the name) channel was targeted in Karachi”, sticking with their so called media ethics. Isn’t it more ethical to report properly and stay united by pressurizing the government to free the world of journalism from such threats and horrible events.
