Yesterday, the country recorded the coronavirus positivity rate of 7.5%. It's has been around this figure for the last few days.

  • 3,119 Pakistanis tested positive for the coronavirus infection out of the 41,115 sampled.

The positivity rate is the ratio of tests returning positive out of the total samples taken in a day. At the peak of the first wave of Covid-19 in June-July, Pakistan had been reporting a positivity rate of around 15-20%. It shrank significantly as the country impressively contained the viral infection in the next couple of months. So much so that for several weeks between August-October it remained 1-2% only. But now it has been surging again for the past three to four weeks.

The second wave of COVID-19 is overwhelming several regions of Pakistan. The coronavirus isolation hospitals are nearing their full capacity. The situation in major cities is especially critical.

The general public is showing a non-serious attitude towards the spread of the flu bug which is leading to rising cases in the country. According to the federal government's statistics, to date, 413,191 people have contracted the virus while 8,303 succumbing to the viral disease.
