PDM split: Fazlur Rehman gives a chance to estranged PPP, ANP to rejoin the alliance

Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Tuesday asked the PPP and ANP to review their decision to leave the opposition alliance.

JUI-F chief made these remarks while he was addressing a press conference in Islamabad after chairing a meeting of the Opposition alliance, minus PPP and ANP. Fazalur Rehman used the opportunity to ask PPP and ANP leadership to reconsider their departure from the PDM:

"The PDM was not formed so that we bicker over one position or the other. We have seen many challenges and were always able to sort things out with dialogue and mutual understanding. Even today, the PPP and ANP have the opportunity to review their decision."

The JUI-F chief was accompanied by other leaders of the alliance, including PML-N's Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Ahsan Iqbal.

These comments come a day after PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had announced to part ways with the alliance and directed all PPP office-bearers in PDM to submit their resignation with immediate effect.

Bilawal, while addressing a press conference after the meeting of PPP's Central Executive Committee (CEC), demanded an immediate apology for this obnoxious conduct and said:

“We must have a working relationship in opposition. There is no concept of show-cause notices in PDM. They may have not understood as they have not taken part in any democratic party. PPP took part in the Movement for Restoration of Democracy (MRD) in the past.”

ANP had already announced its separation from the PDM after receiving the notice characterizing it as a move to tarnish the party's reputation.

Both PPP and ANP leaders had blamed PML-N vice president Maryam Nawaz's 'dictatorial attitude' for the rifts in the movement.

The differences between PDM and PPP's stance started to emerge when PPP refused to participate in en-mass resignations from the provincial and national assemblies. And grew further over the appointment of opposition leader in Senate.

PDM had suggested opposition leader in Senate be from PML-N, however, instead of complying with the PDM's wishes PPP succeeded in the appointment of former premier Yusuf Raza Gillani as the opposition leader in the upper house of the Parliament.
