Ghotki train clash: Death toll jumps to 62

Two express trains clashed near Sindh's Ghotki, leaving at least 62 passengers dead and over 100 injured on Monday, said the rescue officials.

According to the detail, the rescue operation is in process. Pakistan Army, Rangers, and Rescue 1122 team from Rahim Yar Khan are taking part in the mission.

Most of the injured have been evacuated to the hospitals of Rahim Yar Khan, Ghotki, and Mirpur Mathelo. While seriously injured people are being evacuated to Pano Aqil through helicopters.

The track is yet to be cleared even a day after the accident.

Pakistan Railways sets up information helpline:

The Directorate of Pakistan Railways has set up an emergency contact information helpline to ease access to information about the accident, a spokesperson for the Pakistan Railways said.

The public can get information about the accident by calling to Karachi center on 0331-2716334 and 0300-3754200 or the Hyderabad center on 022-9200483, 022-9200258, 022-9200678, and 022-9200674. While the Faisalabad center can be reached on 041- 9200488.

Azam Swati reaches Ghotki:

Federal Railways Minister Azam Khan Swati has reached Ghotki and will supervise the rescue efforts. According to the details, the federal minister has asked authorities to submit an initial investigation report within 24 hours.

Pakistan Army to run the rescue operation:

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Army and Rangers troops have reached the incident site and carrying out relief and rescue operations.

Military doctors and paramedics along with ambulances moved from Pano Aqil have also reached the incident site.

"Engineer resources moved to carry out necessary relief & rescue work. Army special Engineer Team Urban Search and Rescue ( USAR) has also reached the site of the incident carrying Disc cutters, Hydraulic spreaders, life locators, and search cameras," the military's media wing said and added that 2 helicopters are being flown from Multan for casualties evacuation and speedy relief measures.

A relief camp has also been established by the army and cooked meals are being provided to the affectees of the accident.

The initial relief efforts were carried out by the police and rescue officials, with the help of locals, Police officer Usman Abdullah informed the AP news agency and added that villagers helped local authorities pull out bodies and injured people from the wreckage.

The collision took place between the Raiti and Obaro railway stations between 3:40 and 3:45 am when the Sargodha bound Millat Express derailed and the Karachi bound Sir Syed Express hit it soon afterward. It is yet unclear what caused the accident.

Drivers and crew of both trains are safe, says DS Railways

The DS railways Suukkur has said that the drivers and crew of both trains are safe. He revealed that eight bogies of Millat Express and three bogies of Sir Syed Express have been affected.

Relief trains have been sent from Khanewal and Rohri, he further added.

Meanwhile, Ghotki Deputy Commissioner Usman Abdullah told Geo News that 13 to 14 bogies derailed as a result of the clash and eight bogies had been severely damaged.

PM Khan orders investigation into railway safety fault-lines:

Soon after the accident was reported, Prime Minister Imran Khan took to Twitter to express his grief over the tragic event. In a Tweet, Khan said:

"Shocked by the horrific train accident at Ghotki early this morning leaving 30 passengers dead. [I] have asked [the] Railway Minister to reach site [and] ensure medical assistance to injured & support for families of the dead."

"[I am] ordering a comprehensive investigation into railway safety fault-lines," the premier added.

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ch Fawad Hussain said Railway Minister Azam Swati will soon reach Ghotki. It is too early to determine the cause, however, a thorough investigation is needed to reach a conclusion:

President Arif Alvi offered his condolences to the families of affectees and prayers for victims of the accident.

It is important to mention that Pakistan Railways (PR) has a disturbing track record of accidents. In the last five years, more than 232 people have lost their lives in approximately 16 accidents involving PR.
