The Ghotki train accident happened after Millat Express derailed because of the track's broken welding joint, an initial investigation report into the incident suggests.

According to the details, the rescue officials have recovered black boxes from both trains, and data extracted from them will be used to conduct in-depth investigations into the deadly train crash that left 62 dead and over 100 injured.

As per Geo News, the accident took place between 3:40 and 3:45 am when the welding joint of the up track's right side broke. As a result, 12 coaches of the Sargodha bound Millat Express to crash onto a down track.

The collision happened when Karachi-bound Sir Syed Express hit Millat Express' coaches on the down track.

Railways was aware of the rough state of tracks in Sukhur division:

Higher authorities of Pakistan Railways were briefed about the vulnerabilities of 900-kilometre-long up and down tracks of the Sukkur division twice but no action was taken for the repairment of the track, reported Dawn News citing PR Sukkur division’s superintendent Mian Tariq Latif as a source.

Between Obaro station and Raiti station — where the accident occurred — 13 spots were marked as dangerous, however, authorities did not take any action, Aaj News learned.
