Institute of Business Administration (IBA)’s final year student Muhammad Gibaril who was expelled for exposing harassment case at the varsity has been reinstated after his review petition was heard.

The decision to reinstate the expelled student was taken by IBA Executive Director Syed Akbar Zaidi.

According to IBA's spokesperson, the decision was taken after the Executive Director of the varsity conducted a hearing of the student's appeal against the Disciplinary Committee’s decision to expel him on September 29.

"The IBA looks forward to all stakeholders, including students, engaging in a responsible, healthy and constructive discourse with the aim of taking the institution to new heights," the spokesperson said.

Last month, IBA Karachi had expelled a student for helping bring to light a case in which a female member of staff was harassed by a male colleague. This action came in the wake of protests by IBA students against the case, which was described as workplace harassment.

According to a copy of the ruling by the university’s Disciplinary Committee, which had been circulating online, the student Mohammad Gibrail stood accused of “defaming” the university on social and broadcast media, as well as “inciting the masses especially the students to protest” against the institute.

Gibaril expressed his disappointment with the decision and said that he was not given a fair chance during the disciplinary committee hearing.

Earlier reports had indicated that the student was asked to issue a public apology and remove his social media posts about the incident. His refusal was met with threats of expulsion.

IBA students had earlier been protesting against what they described as pressure being brought to bear against him by the university administration.

Meanwhile, the female employee also had filed a harassment application, but nothing substantial has come of it as of yet.

According to the sources, she has been transferred to another department while the accused is still holding his position.
