Lahore Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Umer Sheikh, on Monday, apologized to the motorway gang-rape victim for his inappropriate remarks. Sheikh, in his remarks, had implied that the victim shares the responsibility for the unfortunate incident as she didn't check her fuel before leaving the house and choose to travel through motorway instead of the GT road.

He spoke to the media today before appearing in front of the Lahore High Court today to share the progress of the case. While speaking to the media, Sheikh said:

"I did not mean anything wrong or [to give a wrong] perception and if any misunderstanding was caused because of me, then I apologize from the depths of my heart to my sister who was abused and to all sections of society who were saddened or angered."

The city police chief has also been given a show-cause notice by the Inspector General of Police (IG) Inam Ghani for his inappropriate re,ark on Saturday.

"The IG has issued him a show-cause notice [for his statement] and directed him to submit a reply within seven days," revealed chief minister Punjab Usman Buzdar in a press conference.

The LHC, while hearing a petition for the formation of a judicial inquiry commission to investigate the unfortunate incident today, had asked the Punjab government to apologize to the nation for misogynistic remarks by the CCPO.

"What kind of an inquiry is this where the departmental head is holding the victim responsible for the incident?" remarked Chief Justice Qasim Khan, referring to the CCPO's comments and added, "The entire Punjab cabinet should have apologised for the Lahore police chief's remarks."
